Overview
RasterBook is a software for creating electronic books for portable media
players (PMP) like Cowon iAudio A2 and alike, and for other devices that
have somewhat restricted environment, like Apple iPhone.
Most media players have good built-in applications for viewing photos and images,
but very few of them have decent text viewing facilities. The main idea behind RasterBook
is rasterizing electronic book in HTML format into a set of static images (pages)
that can be viewed with device's built-in photo viewing application.
Pros
- Your electronic book can be as rich visually as the HTML file can be: any styles, fonts,
color, illustrations, backgrounds, etc.
- It doesn't matter how big or complex markup in your book is: the speed of
“flipping pages” is limited with the ability of the device to
switch from one image to another (and most media players cope with this very well and fast).
- You can use the power of ClearType technology to produce very crisp-loking text which is
much easier to read.
Cons
- As book is rendered as a set of images, it takes more storage space. For example,
a typical book for Cowon iAudio A2 consisiting of 200 pages will be about 3.5 MB is size.
For Apple iPhone, where the only option is using JPEG images, the same book will weigh
about 20 MB.
- No hyperlinks, no text search.

RasterBook is available for Windows platform only (Windows XP/Vista).
Optional Downloads
There's also an optional Perl script for converting books that can be found in
lib.ru library into well-formed HTML with paragraphs,
hyphenation, etc.
